August 2010
THANK YOU Dr. Miles for gelding newly halter broke Dark Chocolate (Arabian) & for carefully examining White Cloud who amazingly had gauze remaining inside of him after being gelded (at another location) 1 1/2 weeks ago.  Dr Miles did an emergency removal of the gauze which was left inside of him, removed dead skin, & did a vet check & protection from infection on this sweet boy, a recent seizure reclaim by a wonderful lady who followed up on 3 horses & found them in an unsafe environment.
We got in some beautiful 1,200 lb hay round bales for our penned horses who are in rehab or training.   we can't wait to get more truck loads to begin preparing to stock up for winter while also feeding it out when needed.
We  just completed our new Haute Horsey Habits line of note cards using Laurie Justus Pace fine art & are looking to launch it in retail outlets & also to allow other rescues to raise money for themselves @ $1 over our cost to assist more horses nationally.
THANK YOU DAVID PRIDDY for the surprise donation of a brand new PC to replace our old out of date (very slow & inadequate)  one.  Now we can more efficiently update our web sites, promote  our fund raisers & talk to our Face Book & other rescue friends!

July  2010
We learned of a huge seizure of 48 Arabians in McKinny Texas & offered to assist.   Fortunately we were asked to take only 3-which is a wonderful reflection of lots of volunteers & kind people who came out to take these deserving horses.  We received 1 stallion (now named Dark Chocolate) & 2 mares: One named Hazel & one named Rosebud.  All are very sweet, but with no training.  I will concentrate on building up their low weights & first getting  the stallion halter broke & trained to lead so I can have him gelded.  Once that is acomplished I will move on to train & calm te girls.
Please join us in sending GET WELL wishes to our dear sweet adopted Fannie (former PMU mare) who recently was discovered to have some unexplained paralysis.  Her huge hearted adoptive mom (ANN) is consulting all vets & experts to get her beloved girl healed.   There is nothing like the love bond between these 2.  We pray all will end well for this family.
We are working on a new fund raiser & have included caps & a line of note cards are being created featuring the fabulous art of Laurie Justus Pace!
We are so happy to report the two horses recently adopted & transported safely to New Mexico are doing very well, are already adjusted & bonding with their new home.  One is a beloved prized beauty & the other a first horse for 4H bound youngsters!  It is wonderful when rescued horses find perfect new forever homes! THANK YOU Ann,  and  Annie & family!!
THANK YOU Zephyr's Garden for your generous donation of summer supports!!!   We are  basking in your natural fly spray, helping 3-4 horses with fungal issues with your fungus spray & dabbing a few ouchys with your helaing ointment.  We love your quality products that REALLY WORK!

JUNE 2010
We are excited to share adoptive news for 2 lucky rescues: TY & Crown Royal!!!  A $750 donation was made for TY & an entire load of hay (round bales) has been donated & will bedelivered in winter  for Crown Royal.
We were initially excited about the possibility to Foster Shorty, a stout & gorgeous paint with navicular issues.  Thus far in our 5+ years of rescue we have not fostered.  Due to Shorty being a new arrival, his having hoof issues, & our being new to Fostering the excess of new elements was too great to comfortably transition this wonderful fellow so soon.  We also had other inquiries, but felt it in his best interest to follow his progress here until he is a more solid healthy horse again.  The Foster candidate (Leisel) could not have been more well qualified, but sometimes timing is awkward & there were too many  variables.  We can't wait to get this boy back in good shape.  We have started his rehab & have 100% confidence that he will be ready to ride this year!
We are saying good bye to our 4 boarders who are leaving for New Mexico! Their adoptive owners have prepared a beautiful new home for them with their own barn, acreage & caretaker.   After preparing the proper paperwork & vet support, a transport company  carefully carried these boys to their new home.  They are beautiful, healthy, lucky formerly rescued boys.
WOW!   EQUINE SCIENCE is sponsoring Van Gough & Shorty!   This means all of 40 year old Vans needs: Glucosamine for arthritic support, non drug pain support, Sr support, respiratory support, joint support, circulation support & natural wormer will be sponsored & provided by this generous caring company who specializes in TOP of the LINE HERBAL supplements.  Additionally Shorty's rehab protocol will be supplied:  Hoof/Coat/Skin, joint support, Glucosamine, Circulation support, & natural wormer!!
THANK YOU  EQUINE SCIENCE! Your products are awesome & so are you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May 2010
Wish us luck-a family is considering two paint foals to start a  horse family to share with their children!
Please welcome Maynard County starved & neglected QH Bays: Coco & Lady.   Lady is a 16 year old mare, Coco a 6 year old stud.  Coco was gelded prior to arriving to avoid the possibility of additional foals.    HHH Rescue would like to commend Maynard County for its advanced work on these starved horses.  They arrived in 100% better shape then expected due to the fine care given by the Maynard local vet.
Tyler is being considered for a young 8 year old who will be learning to ride & show.  He had been adopted previously but the new owner had a baby & was unable to give him the attention he needed.
We are very excited to report APHA gelding Crown Royal is being adopted by a former adoptive (Ann) who adopted a PMU mare who later gave birth to a foal.   Ann, mare & foal, have since moved to a beautiful ranch in New Mexico.  We're getting Crown all set with his required shots for NM.

April 2010
ADOPTIONS went out to perfect new homes for 3 exceptional horses:  Vinny, a 17+hand jumper now  named Thor, Firefox, a 16.5 hand Grand National Champion Show Horse with arthritis (when ridden), but with perfect ground skills, & OSO a 17.5 hand trail ready ex-teaching (one blind eyed) horse now named Texas!
Welcome new arrival:  7 year old APHA Shorty, who came in with detached naviculars.  He has been reshod from bars to corks & is on specific supplementation to rehab his hooves with hopes of a full recovery over time.
We were proud to attend EQUINE AFFAIRE in Columbus Ohio as a speaker on 4 topics:
-Environmental Toxins Affect Your Horse.
-Organic Farming & Horses.
-Natural Alternatives for Headshakers & Wind sucking.
-Dermatological Issues of the Horse.
(We had been asked to speak last year but were unable to attend due to too many special needs horses at the rescue.  We hope to be able to do more speaking engagements in the future.  Meanwhile we continue writing: Healthy Horse Hints & have over 100 published articles on natural alternatives for the horse.)

March 2010
A network of people, along with HHH,  participated in finding homes for a donkey, a pony & a goat in the Denton area.
Awesome 27 year old mare Daisy May has joined our ranks.  She is ready to join any family seeking a wonderful easy/safe  ride.
We are very excited to have 3 deserving horses to go out for adoptive consideration to Midlothian to a wonderful new home.  Each horse will be evaluated with hopes of making a forever relocation.
We were proud to aid the relocation of 3 mares in Glen Rose needing re-homing after owners (the husband & wife) were getting a divorce.

February 2010
A very cold, wet & busy month here at HHH Rescue, but full of exciting (& much needed) support from our new Face Book supporters.  The rescue received several coats from Face Book friends Cheryl, Wynne & Zephyr's Garden, along with some halters, bridles, leads ropes, lunge lines, & a helmet etc.
We have been doing a lot of BOMB PROOFING & training this month in an effort to identify each horses needs & strengths to maximize their chances for adoption!
(See over 80 photo albums on Face Book)
We have pending adoptions for Crown Royal, Rowdy Dale & Annie Oakley, & a (to be identified soon) Sr. horse!
May 2010
A severely underweight abandoned mare was rescued & brought to HHH.  She was later named by the DeSoto Christian Adventists School who made her their mascot.  Her name is now BROWN SUGAR.  The kids plan to visit when the weather warms up
We received a very generous $1,000 donation from Ann.
We received a $25 per month pledge for the year from an anonymous donor.
Beautiful mare Bella arrived due to an owners financial problems.  No one would take the 20 year old mare.  The younger brood mares were placed elsewhere.

January 2010
SWEET SWEET (blind) QUESO arrived & we received a $50 per month sponsor to support his special needs!
SWEETHEART, Sr. neglected & abused mare was able to stay (as a FOSTER) with the original rescuer (Debbye) who happily placed 3 horses making room for Sweetheart. HHH Rescue is supporting donors with IRS receipts for those wishing to assist in Sweethearts care.
THANK YOU to GLYNN SYDNEY for her Biofeedback session  donations for Dreamer & Wally's rehab.
Zephyr's Garden sent us a GENEROUS DONATION of totally healthful supports for the horses & for adoptive families.
Many thanks, also to Wynne Davis  for our introduction  to Georgette (owner) of Zephyr's Garden

7/26Please help us welcome deserving BeBe, formerly abused, then        rescued, now relocated former English riding mare to the rescue.
We are thrilled to announce a successful 7/27 auction rescue of 3 mounted police horses from Dallas.  This was truly a team effort.  A young autistic child's family has adopted one horse & a family of 5 has adopted one horse & is on their way to adopting 4 horses over the next month or so.  Additionally we coordinated with a Polo club in Austin to receive 2 A&M polo horses being auctioned off 7/30.  Both the Dallas Police Dept. & A&M university had to sell via public auction-a difficult setting to protect horses, but grace was on our side & these 2 auctions were successfully executed to place all horses involved.  NONE went to slaughter.
In early July , after receiving a call from a nearby humane society, we will be providing a home for 2 deserving horses who were
seized by Animal Control, starved & neglected.  (Help us welcome 12 yr old RED (gelding) & 21 yr old MOLLY (hard of hearing & may be going blind in one eye).

O
OUR STORY:

In 2005 I ran across a large herd of horses whose numbers were dropping slowly within the herd, periodically & mysteriously (so it seemed at the time), horses would die due to unknown causes.  Knowing that unexplained things do happen to horses, I did not pursue the matter further.  Over time the death toll rose & I became even more suspicious.  In my personal investigation, it was clear a "mixed herd" was being fed daily (so they said), but only once a day in one spot.  Over 50 horses (of mixed age, health, & hierachy had to fight among themselves for feed.  Those of you who really care about the well-being of horses know survival of the fittest rules in the horse world!  Although I brought the need to separate the herd into more appropriate groups (at the very least for feeding), my desires were ignored.  Sadly more horses died (mostly from sheer starvation & neglect).  Included among the deaths was a horse dear to me: Bobby Sock Doc (son of Doc Bar pictured with me-above.  I played bugle on Bobby's back.  He proudly led us safely in "charge", or the "call to mess" (gather for lunch).  Too little too late, I insisted they care for the more emaciated & Sr horses immediately.  To my surprise I was told "you care so much-you take 'em", so I did.  Due to the age & health of these particular horses, they still remain here at Happy Horse Haven (the rescues name as it became the following year).  Almost all of the horses at Happy Horse Haven Rescue are adoptable to qualifying competent, loving, caring families.  All adoptive families become a part of the HHH family & are contacted periodically every year for photos & updates, even visited in person.  An adoption contract is signed which includes a declaration that no horse will be knowingly sold to slaughter.  Even a "return clause" is included when horses can no longer be cared for, as well as an "upon death" clause to designate where the horse goes at that time.  Every measure is taken to provide for a healthy, happy & safe future for adoptive Happy Horse Haven Rescued horses!

O5 OLDTIMERS STARTED

  IT ALL:

This is Rooster, a hard keeper (their description-not mine). He came from the original herd I tried to save back in 2005.  Rooster is a Palomino.  Not a more loving horse will you find.  He follows you around, stares in-or opens- the back door if he wants to encourage a hand out of carrots & apples. Regardless of a bribe, out comes a big 'ole slurpy tongue.  Rooster will literally lick you like a dog.  When he arrived he was about 700 lbs.  Due to his shaggy wintertime coat the total skin & bone skeleton was not quite as apparent until  warmer weather encouraged a very slow shedding of his coat.  Rooster has a cresty neck & is insulin intolerant.  He is a blessing & has improved over the years to 1,000 pounds    now, with minimal feeding.  He is loved by all & is a favorite  for short rides.  He is like a man with a tall hat when you put a saddle on him-he becomes the leader of the ride.  Once the saddle is off, he goes back to lowest in the pecking order yet always high among humans!!!  Happy Horse Haven is Roosters forever home.

N
NEW YEARS RESCUE of  27 TEXAS  NHORSES:

This is Ms. Sassy Pants, a beautiful long lashed young wild mare.  Late in 2007 it was brought to my attention that a herd of 27 wild horses was being sold to slaughter.  Oddly, these horses were not old or sick, just unwanted.  The owner couldn't keep them & wanted a fast way out.  This was my first "eye opening exposure to the senseless slaughter of sound horses".  How could anyone slaughter young healthy horses?? Of course I became involved in the rescue.  At New Years, momentum was rallied for adoption & fortunately many were pre-adopted sight unseen.  The remaining herd was brought to Happy Horse Haven. In a few brief weeks due to local newspaper exposure & support from the community, 8 were adopted out, with 4 more over time as well.  Only one was not adopted-the  young mare whom I named Ms. Sassy pants.  She gave birth to Equinox (the foal featured on the "About Us" page).  He was given the name Equinox (Equi for short) because he was born on the calendar day of the vernal Equinox. Another horse from the herd, a wild stud (whom we quickly gelded along with the other studs), was a stand out because of his gorgeous markings. He was immediately adopted & desired by many.  Time passed & he was never picked up so he still remains at Happy Horse Haven Rescue.  I later named him Cherokee.  He is, again, up for adoption.   (Cherokee  is the horse featured  on every card "back" of the Help Horses Heal deck of cards.  See fund-raising products.)

NNORTH   DAKOTA RESCUE
Nof NINE  REGISTERED HORSES:

This registered pregnant APQH mare, arrived from North Dakota.  She is a unique Cremello.  Later giving birth to a sweet registered buckskin foal, this deserving mare still resides at HHH.  In 2008, Cremello was 1 OF 7 registered pregnant mares headed for slaughter, along with 2 registered studs.  Only 2-4 horses were to remain at HHH, but due to economics & the need for safe re-cooperation, the entire herd stayed.  Sadly upon arrival, one sorrel mare (who had dropped 3 times on the ride from N. Dakota to Texas) was near death due to long term neglect.  This sorrel, whom I later named Navajo Red, is now perfectly healthy & back to full weight.  HHH found loving homes for 2 of the pregnant mares.  Both had world champion background & both later gave birth to registered healthy foals.(Me Me & Thor).   All 4 healthy horses reside within 30 miles of HHH.  The remaining mares, foals & stud are available for adoption.  *Note:  The stud is a registered 13 year old paint.  He has laminitis. We are trying to keep him in tact for his safety & to retain his working value in hopes of adoptive interests. I named  him Maverick & he is gentle & very sweet.  He was severely neglected, but has made 100% improvement in his favor-both mentally & physically!  His foals are noticeably outstanding.  (See Sargeant Major under foals.)  HHH's policy is to geld studs,  so after no signs of Maverick's being adopted over a year-he was gelded.

hWhat ALL RESCUES  DDREAM OFF
   ...the PERFECT  DM
ATCH:

Universally ALL RESCUES desire to place horses in a safe, loving forever home that encourages the horses growth and enhances their life experiences.  Occasionally that pairing is PERFECT..the horse is willing and has the ability to learn, as well as desires to please their new caretaker.  In early 2008 supportive grandparents "Leon & Jill Meredith, took a chance on a 3 year old WILD FILLY whom they later named DIXIE.  Dixie was to be a surprise for their grand-daughter Lacey.  No one could have hoped for a better outcome.  Accomplished trainer, but a bit rusty, Grandpa Leon immediately began training Dixie.  It took less than 2 months to train her, and in less than 4 months Dixie & Lacey were winning ribbons at 4H camp.  Everyone was astounded that Dixie, a WILD FILLY, had come so far so quickly!  The two have continued to bond & learn "together" as a team, yet even younger siblings are carefully carried by this soft-hearted intelligent horse.  Dixie & Lacey are a wonderful reminder of the potential in ALL HORSES when given a CHANCE to live, learn, & be loved!
